Alternate titles considered:
“Tongue-tied with awesomeness” (yellow one with 3 tongues)
“Pure awesomeness”
“Ever had one of those days” (for the green, googly-eyed one)
Something to do with the injustice of Marie Curie’s head ending up on a float

Although they are all true in their own way, I couldn’t find the perfect image to represent each, nor were they witty enough. Now I’m trying to rewrite the title and post while waiting for the gas company to arrive and refill my tank. Implied in this last statement is that I could not make coffee at home this morning, so I am trying to make do with corner-store instant. I don’t mind waiting for the gas company, but the creeping caffeine headache is not a good way to start the day, let alone the week. So, that is all a long excuse for having only an adequate title and my writing being off-track. Back to the photos of giant alebrijes!

On a Saturday afternoon during the weekend visit to Mexico City with my Mom, we were coming back from the pyramids in Teotihuacan, and just before we arrived back at the hotel, we were driven past the most amazing display of giant alebrijes. Of course, we immediately changed our plan from returning to the hotel and instead hopped out of the van to explore. I didn’t really investigate why there had apparently been a parade with these guys, but they all seemed to be sponsored by different groups. The next day, they were all parked in the Zocolo, and I just wished I had seen them in transit on the streets.

  1. Fabulous pictures, as usual! Possible explanation for Madame Curie being on a float (not sure why it was just her gruesome-looking head) is that her birthday is Nov. 7.

  2. She was also on an alebrije float sponsored by a university department, although I forget which one and didn’t photograph it. She was in good floating-head company with a variety of other famous historical scientists, but I just thought she might not necessarily approve of all the places she has ended up.
